Recent Algae Blooms on Area Lakes

The Comfort Lakes/Forest Lake Watershed District has received inquiries regarding recent algae blooms on District lakes despite the cooler temperatures. Mike Kinney, CLFLWD Administrator, wanted me to pass along some information that Steve McComas (Blue Water Science Founder) provided us regarding this matter.

In the past week or two you may have noticed some blue-green algae along your shoreline on the lake despite temperatures dropping. What has happened is the algae that was in the water column, below the water’s surface, has risen and become concentrated on the surface of the water. Wind and wave action has pushed this algae up to the shoreline making it appear that  we are experiencing a large algae bloom when in reality this algae was already in the lake and is now just concentrated and more visible. Steve McComas also mentioned that he has observed this on other lakes as well, so it is not just the District lakes experiencing this phenomenon. If you have any additional questions or concerns regarding this please feel free to contact me.

Thanks and have a nice day!
